15th Sunday Ordinary Time – Homily (Fr. Gribowich)

Good morning, everyone.

Great joy to be with you here at the 11:15 mass and plus there’s even a greater joy that we get to welcome Sister Lilia, who’s here from the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, who will be speaking to us in a few moments about the important missionary work that she does and give us a window into really the challenges that exist with our brothers and sisters in other places around the world, just taken by the fact that when Jesus gives authority to the disciples or really to anyone, to anyone who is a missionary disciple, it comes with a certain type of cost.

Now, this is kind of a little surprising because usually when we think of people who have authority, they have somehow earned it, meaning that they have the proper amount of education, the proper amount of skills.

They may even have a certain type of social status or financial status that gives them street creds, credibility to have authority over others.

Letter to the Ephesians 1:14
July 11, 2021

This summer we will be studying the 2nd reading for Sundays which is now called the “Letter of Paul to the Ephesians”. Most discussions of this letter begin by asking if it was written by St. Paul himself in the 60s or a disciple most likely in the 90s. This will not concern us here. It is a complicated question and as we will see in a few weeks, it has much to do with post reformation church politics. Another question is the original audience. This too does not directly interest us. It was most likely written to several churches, one of which was Ephesus. This will mean that it will not have the local color of some of the letters attributed to St. Paul but will free the author to more directly examine “Cosmic” themes.

Mission Appeal Next Sunday

Next Sunday, July 11, we will be visited by a missionary from the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Their ministry focuses serving those in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, especially the homeless, street children, the orphans, children with disabilities, children living with HIV-AIDS, refugees, elderly, youth, single mothers and those affected by the pandemic, which is currently surging in Africa.

The Little Sisters ask for our prayers and financial support of their ministry for the marginalized children who have been impacted greatly by COVID-19 pandemic. If you would like to contribute, you can do so through our online giving site, https://stcharlesbklyn.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/LittleSistersofSaintFrancis.

Below is more information about the Little Sisters of St. Francis.
