Spring Concert – Saturday, April 14

On Saturday, April 14 at 7 pm,  Sergio Sandí, Music Director and pianist at St. Charles Borromeo, and Adrian Sandí, NYC Clarinet Solo Recitalist, will perform a concert of classical music by Lutoslawski, Schumann, Castro and Brahms.

During his career Sergio Sandí has participated in numerous concerts, recitals and other presentations at Costa Rica’s principal venues, and also in the U.S.A., Italy, France, Lithuania, and Guatemala. Among his many honors Mr. Sandi was awarded the Costa Rican National Prize in Music as best solo performer, the highest award in Costa Rica, given by the Ministry of Culture. Mr. Sandí serves as director of music at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brooklyn Heights, and St. Andrew the Apostle in Bay Ridge.

Adrián Sandí is currently a freelancer in the NYC metro area. An active solo recitalist, Adrián has given numerous chamber music and solo performances throughout his career in Costa Rica, Panama, U.S.A., Canada, China, Mexico and Germany. An avid performer of new music, Adrián is currently a member of Ensemble Signal and Periapsis Music and Dance. He has performed with groups such as Bang on a Can All-Stars, loadbang, New York New Music Ensemble, Mimesis Ensemble and Numinous. Adrián has performed as the principal clarinetist of Wichita Symphony Orchestra for their 2011-12 season and with ensembles such as Princeton Symphony Orchestra, Lake Placid Sinfonietta, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica and the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific.

Tickets are $15 and will be sold at the door.

Clergy Staffing Changes

Farewell Fr. Anselmus
Fr. Anselmus Mawusi, who has ministered at St. Charles Borromeo since November of 2016, has been asked to assist in another parish. He will be remembered and missed. Msgr. LoPinto has graciously volunteered to assist whenever he can, and I am grateful to him for his generosity.
I am sure that I speak for everyone when I assure Fr. Anselmus that he will be in our minds, hearts and prayers. His new assignment is at:

Welcome Father John Gribowich
Bishop Di Marzio had assigned Fr. John Gribowich to reside at St Charles beginning in Mid-April. He is presently serving in St. Nicolas of Tolentine Parish in Jamaica, Queens. Father Gribowich’ s day job will be at De Sales Media, the communications ministry of the Diocese. It includes “The Tablet”, NET TV and outreach through social media. He will also be pursing an executive MBA at the University of California at Berkeley. More information will follow.

Lenten Observances

| St. Charles Borromeo

During Lent we are called to prayer, fasting, and alms-giving:

Eucharistic Adoration: Monday-Friday 9 am – noon

Living Lent Scripture Prayer Groups: Sundays 10 am, 8 pm; Thursdays 7:30 pm; Fridays 12:35 pm.

Confession: Weekdays 11:45-noon (before Weekday Mass)

Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl: Pick up a mite box to take home – bring back your donation before Easter.

Friday Abstinence: Parishioners from ages 14 and above are asked to not eat meat on Fridays during Lent, as well as on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those ages 18 – 59 are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Easter Vigil Choir: Volunteers requested to sing during the Easter Vigil on March 31st. Please contact Sergio Sandí at [email protected] or via the contact form.

Ash Wednesday Schedule 2/14

Lent is a time for looking at our lives and finding both the presence and the absence of God. We thank Him for his Grace through our relationship with Jesus, but we take this time to pause and reflect on how we have weakened this relationship though sin. On Ash Wednesday we are signed with ashes to show our recognition that we need repentance. It is an important ritual and, as you can see below, we will make every opportunity help you receive them. Please note however we also will have many hours for confession. What better day to ask for the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness.

MORNING
7:00 a.m.: Mass with distribution of ashes
11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Confessions

AFTERNOON
12:10 p.m. Mass with distribution of ashes
4:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday (Non – Eucharistic) Service with Confessions to 5:30 p.m.

EVENING:
6:30 p.m. Confessions to when last person leaves
7:00 p.m. Mass with distribution of ashes

HOMEBOUND:
If you or a neighbor are homebound and wish to receive ashes and Holy Communion, please call the rectory for a home visit on Ash Wednesday.

Lenten Scripture Groups

| St. Charles Borromeo

This Lenten season, St. Charles invites you to Live Lent. Join a small group for an opportunity to share your faith with some of your fellow parishioners. These weekly small discussion groups take a deeper look at each Sunday’s gospel and provide inspiration for conversation about how our faith applies to our everyday lives. Sign-up sheets are available in the pews and at the back of the church. Please fill one out with your contact information and your day & time meeting preferences. Either drop it in the offertory basket or put it in one of the baskets at the back of the church on your way out.

Groups start the first week of Lent (Feb. 15) and run for six weeks (through March 28). Instead of giving up chocolate, join us this Lent to connect with your parish neighbors, deepen your spirituality and learn more about your faith. If you’d like more information, please contact the rectory.

Lenten Eucharistic Adoration

| St. Charles Borromeo

Lent begins on Wednesday, February 14th and we will once again have Eucharistic Adoration every weekday morning from 9:00 AM until noon.

To do this, we need at least one person present at all times in the church. So we are looking for volunteers to fill an hourly time slot, once a week. (Monday -Friday, 9-12)
Perhaps if you are in the neighborhood during the weekdays this Lent, you can help us out? If you cannot commit to a weekly hour, but can do several hours over the season, that is very helpful to us and we would love to hear from you.
